Railway Stations and Cardiac Arrests

Last October, London reported a very sad incident of a 3 year old dying to cardiac arrest at the London Bridge Train station. The boy collapsed and went into a cardiac arrest on the platform, though people tried to resuscitate the child, but since medical help came 3 minutes after the arrest, there was no chance of saving the child.

Let’s think of a different ending, could the child have been saved? Yes, as they say that the minutes immediately after the arrest are the most critical, had the child been provide professional help right after the arrest, he would have lived to grow up and fulfill the dreams his parents were building for him.

India also has shocking statistics, according to an article in DNA newspaper, More than 15 per cent people, who became a statistic in the railway deaths register, did not die from being run over by trains or falling off them. They died because of heart attacks suffered inside trains or at the platforms while waiting for train.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) can help save lives of victims suffering from a sudden cardiac arrest.
During a sudden cardiac arrest, the contractions of the heart become irregular and the ventricles begin to quiver. This leads to loss of blood flow to the body and the patient loses consciousness. Symptoms of a SCA range from dizziness to extreme palpitation and in more than half of the cases, SCAs occur without prior symptoms.

If not treated immediately, SCAs can cause death. AEDs are portable electronic devices that can provide immediate relief to patients by delivering electrical current to the heart which restore normal heartbeat and helps in reviving the patient. AEDs track and analyze a patient’s electrocardiogram signals which help detect life threatening irregularities in heartbeat.

These days, cutting edge AEDs with technological advancements are available in the market.
